One thing we did notice, how boring this competition was compared to previous years. The winning surfer in each event nailed the first wave and then sat on their board for the rest of that heat. At one point we saw 2 rides in 22 minutes of a 35 minute heat.
When Oldecam was surfing in the 1950s the object was to get as many rides as possible, not to wait for the best wave. Obviously the strategies have changed to waiting for hopefully the one best wave. It is no longer surfing, but simply a business which is surf when you have to and wait for the best wave which is disappointing to the fans who really just want to see great surfing and don’t want to just see people sitting on their boards.
When there was surfing it was exciting.
In conclusion, when business when gets in the way of the sport, the sport suffers and the fans always lose the most.
