    The lure of lighthouses

    Extreme Lighthouses of Ireland

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     RCHemstad is a lighthouse enthusiast and was thrilled by these lighthouses in Southern Ireland: 'Fastnet lighthouse stands out as a great sentinel of the sea and is a testament to the lonely job that light keepers had on this isolated rock for nearly 115 years. It is simply amazing how this light continues to withstand the fury of the mighty Atlantic Ocean everyday and how it has provided safety for mariners for so many years.'

We recently traveled to Ireland to be a part of a small Extreme Lighthouse Tour of southern Ireland. Many of these grand old lights were far out to sea and required a pretty wild boat ride to see them. The lighthouse pictures included with this short story are of Fastnet Lighthouse and it is located in the Atlantic Ocean many miles off of the south coast of Ireland. Fastnet was first built in 1854 and then the current light was added in 1899. As it is far out in the water the best way to view this light is via a boat ride out from Crookhaven or the surrounding area. I shot these photos from our boat as we traveled around this isolated rock that the keepers would swim around for recreation. We had the chance to meet with the last active lighthouse keeper from the Fastnet Light after returning to shore. We saw many amazing lighthouses while in Ireland, but Fastnet was our favorite.
