Parents’ Guide For Helping Their Children Better Understand Math

Plenty of children love to count objects and play simple math games. However, as they grow older, their natural affinity for numbers starts to erode since they have already advanced in school as well as their math classes become harder. Experts highly emphasize that when a child starts to feel intimidated by math, this can trigger a cycle of avoidance, anxiety and poor performance. Of course, you would not want this to happen to your child.

As a parent, you can actually encourage your children to appreciate, love and enjoy math by introducing numbers early, as well as treating them as an integral part of everyday life.

Grade-By-Grade Math Tips For Your Children

Kindergarten – During this stage, your children are introduced to a wide range of math essentials. Your children will be able to learn how to recognize numbers, count certain objects, and understand the sequence of numbers. Also, they will learn about basic shapes and identify them. As a parent, you can help your children better understand math by placing certain food items and asking your children to separate each item into small containers. After that, have your children count 3 each onto a particular surface. As he plays, you can motivate him to count the items, ask simple addition and subtraction problems, and emphasize number sequences.

First to fifth grader – In first grade, your children must understand that numbers represent quantity. Also, they will learn more about mastering addition and subtraction up to 20, and developing great grasp of geometric shapes. In second grade, they will learn to add and subtract up to 100, and calculate standard units of measurement like feet, centimeters, and inches. The key component of third grade math is the multiplication table. This is indeed the best time to play multiplication wars like a variation of a card game favorite. In fourth grade, your children must learn to multiply and divide huge number, and understand the properties of geometry. Fractions will likewise be introduced. In fifth grade, your children must be able to add and subtract fractions. The major focus during this stage is decimals. You can encourage them to take learning online.

Middle School – Your children will learn complicated math concepts during this stage. It is important for you to speak with your children about what they study in class, look into their homework, and encourage them to talk about any difficulties with the subject. In case your children are struggling, it is wise to get extra help from math tutors. Allow them also to join math summer camps.

Math can be a difficult subject. But if you help your children to love this subject, they will find it easy to understand, no matter how hard the math problems are.
