Impact Your World
The Independents of Minnesota
I was reading a story about the GOP courting millennials, an S.E. Cupp interview with Rep. Aaron Schock. My first thought as a millennial was : "If you think that millennials will fall into one of two political categories, then you are 'doing it wrong'," as my young friends might say.
As much as I appreciated the perspective of a 33 year old in Congress, I don't and I believe my peers no longer see politics as a binary choice: we are much more independent and like to do things our own way.
My name is Bob Helland. I am a 29 year old candidate for Minnesota secretary of state, endorsed and nominated by the Independence Party of Minnesota - the state's third "major" party.
The IPMN has been able to reach a younger political demographic and even bring previous nonvoters to the polls as I did in my primary contest, for example. We have an opportunity to showcase the vitality and viability of third parties and candidates in 2014, and I have an opportunity to become the youngest elected statewide official in America (currently Jason Kander of MO).
What is our greatest obstacle? A news media that doesn't fairly or accurately represent our party or candidates. That is why "I report". Please consider supporting independent, third-parties who will show that "bipartisanship" has been insufficient and that we need "tripartisanship" - Democrats, Republicans and all the rest of us - to bring true balance to misaligned political systems in America.
