This iReport is part of an assignment:
AMERICA, WE’RE BETTER THAN THIS!
Now that Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and curfew in the wake of the death of unarmed Michael Brown, the 17 year old youth who was shot to death by a veteran police officer one week ago, it’s time we all ask; Isn’t America better than this?
While some may sing; “This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land”, there are many throughout this great nation who believe; “This Land is MY Land”, not to be shared with any immigrants, not to be shared with anyone classified as a “minority”, and only to be shared with those that I designate as my “Kin Folk”, and I’ll protect MY Land, so help me NRA!!
AMERICA, now is the time for “REAL TALK” on race relations!! From the White House to Executive Board Rooms, REAL TALK!! From within our institutions of higher learning, as well as into our high schools, middle schools, and with proper guidance, elementary schools, REAL TALK!! This intolerance called “racism”, or “bigotry”, it is the brain cancer that exists within, and is killing the greatest nation on earth. America, a country held in exceptionally high esteem by many throughout the world who are on the outside looking in at America as the epitome of freedom and opportunity, where many actually believe that “Justice for All” is THE American reality. As many of our citizens who reside in American communities such as Sanford, FL, Jackson, FL, Staten Island, NY, Los Angeles, CA, University Place, WA, and many other rural and urban communities throughout this great nation can painfully attest, the face of justice is far too often becoming distorted and tainted by aggressive violence perpetrated by those who are sworn to “Protect and Serve”. Alarmingly this violence against our American citizens, as perpetrated by many law enforcement personnel is statistically and overwhelmingly targeted against those within our society that are classified as minorities. America, we’re better than this, and now is the time that we MUST demand a dialogue that will effectively confront this American Cancer, with the hope of finding an immediate cure, now, and for future generations.
As I stated in a previous article: “These violent assaults and murders against our young African American citizens are unwarranted, and must come to an end. No black family is safe from the possibility of your child making an unscheduled detour to the morgue, especially in many of these idiotic, license to kill "shoot first and ask questions later" Stand your Ground states, as well as most disturbingly, at the hands of many unethical, trigger happy law enforcement personnel who have zero respect for any minority experience or culture here in America. What happened to Michael Brown could happen to any minority, at any time in what disturbingly appears to be a current “Police State” societal mentality. It doesn't matter if you're an African American CEO of a major corporation, or the High School Custodian, if your child happens to subscribe to Hip-Hop music at loud decibel levels, or just happens to be a BMW (No, not the automobile, rather a Black Man Walking", in your neighborhood, outside your neighborhood, etc.), tragedy can occur at any moment.” Your child is not safe, not until such time that the laws of this society begin to take as hard a stance against these gun-slinging murderers masquerading as “law enforcement” as they have done to young minority youth who are routinely incarcerated for possessing a cigarette's level of marijuana. And, while this does not apply to all law enforcement personnel, (Yes America, there ARE many good cops out there, police officers who I wished would visibly take a stand whenever an injustice perpetrated by one of their own occurs, bringing down the Blue Wall of silence, cover-ups, and intolerance, once and for all, as if it were the Berlin Wall.) America, we ARE better than this!!
I recently wrote a column “In Memoriam” for the late, great Robin McLaurin Williams. I now offer another, of equal importance, deserving of equal attention and dialogue within our culture. Why,,, because AMERICA, we ARE BETTER THAN THIS!!
RODNEY KING, (April 2, 1965 – June 17, 2012) was an American construction worker who became nationally known after being beaten by Los Angeles police officers following a high-speed car chase on March 3, 1991. A local witness videotaped much of savage beating from his balcony. The footage shows five officers surrounding King, several of them striking him repeatedly, while other officers stood by. Part of the footage was aired around the world, inflaming outrage in cities where racial tension was high, and raising public concern about police treatment of minorities.
TRAVON MARTON, Age 17, Killed on February 26, 2012
On the night of February 26th, 2012, Travon Martin was shot to death in Sanford, FL by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer. Martin, a 17 year-old African American high school student, was temporarily staying with his father in the community for which 28 year old Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch coordinator. Martin was UNARMED!!
JORDAN DAVIS, Age 17, Killed on November 23rd, 2012
Jordan Davis was murdered in Jackson, FL by Michael Dunn, who recklessly shot at Davis and 2 other teens at a gas station while they sat in their Dodge Durango. Annoyed by the loud music coming from the Durango, and later stating he believed he saw a gun pointed outside of the youth’s vehicle, Dunn shot at the three youth’s 10 times, with 3 of his gun shots striking Jordan Davis. One bullet cut through Davis’s liver, lung and his aorta.
ERIC GARNER, – July 17th, 2014
Garner, from Staten Island, NY, was known by those who loved him as a “gentle giant”. Garner was a 350 pound, 43-year-old, 6'3" tall African American man who suffered from Asthma. He was KILLED after several NYPD Police Officers put him In a CHOKEHOLD, AFTER Garner had just broken up a FIGHT!! With witnesses clearly videotaping the incident with cell phones, the officers were not deterred by the knowledge that evidence of this senseless murder would be broadcast throughout Social and Mainstream media, for all the world to see.
MICHAEL BROWN, - August 9th, 2014
On August 9th, 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed African American male was shot dead by a Ferguson, MO police officer. Brown, an 18 years-old recent high school graduate, was about to begin college. Later that day, Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, dropped rose petals on the blood stains from marking where her son was slain.
RON HILLSTROM - Age 44 – Beaten to death on May 11th, 2014. Hillstrom, a white man, was beaten to death on May 11th, 2014, by white police officers in University Place, Washington, as he cried out for help, as several witnesses testified. As witnessed testified, Hillstrom appeared to be having a mental episode prior to being brutally beaten to death with flashlights, batons, and tasers, as witnesses looked on. As one visibly shaken witness stated: “You (the police) beat this man to death for no reason, and we caught you on tape, period!
POLICE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, TOO!!
MARLENE PINNOCK, - July, 2014, is videotaped being pulled to the ground by a California Highway Patrol officer and beaten in the face more than 11 times. Pinnock, who does not appear to resist, was savagely beat by someone who seemed to be trying out for mixed martial arts. “I believe he was trying to kill me”, Pinnock was quoted as saying. Clearly behavior beyond unacceptable by someone sworn to “protect and serve”.
America, we’re better than this. This violence perpetrated by those who are sworn to protect and serve must end. Now is the time for dialogue, now is the time for real justice! Now is the time to bring this senseless violence against American citizens to an end!!
