    Can one girl make a difference?

    Like a typical housewife, the REAL Wanganui has been in the shadows for far too long.
    So began my mission, how can one person make a difference? By being bloody determined!
    Not trained in web design, I made it my mission to teach myself how to build a website by watching videos on YouTube. I then spent every waking moment (outside of holding down a full-time job) researching my city, sourcing new, exciting and fun content that my viewers would enjoy.
    Then comes the hard stuff! How do I get the word out about my new site? On a modest income and self-funding this non-profit project, how can I get my site out there and people talking about it?

    For starters I did a little teaser video, set up a FB page called New Zealand’s best kept secret and set a launch date.


    Paid for a bit of FB advertising to promote the post ($100) and asked as many friends and family to share it on their pages.
    I then contacted the local paper and managed to convince them to do a little story on my new website.


    Convinced 2 local designers Dan Hill and Sam Wells to come on-board and help. Sam put together the fast paced exciting video to launch the website, and Dan designed a very eye catchy 3D floor decal which we managed to get the local shopping mall (Trafalgar Square) to agree to let us use their floor.


    Monday 18th August – Launch day!

    Taking the day off work I hit the streets early, I was standing on my spot at one of Wanganui’s busiest intersections, I had a sign that simply said “Think you know the real Wanganui?” www.wanganui-nz.co.nz. Simple but straight to the point. One thing that slipped my mind was a 1.2m wide sign does not fit into a little Daewoo hatch, not letting put me off I simply held it to the roof of my car - not a well thought out plan, a tiny gust of wind almost blew it into the river! – I do not recommend trying this.


    I then headed to all local motels dropping off business cards promoting the website, convincing the owners to place them in all their guest rooms, local isite, and vehicle hire businesses.

    By the end of Monday the video had received over 3000 hits and growing! And the offers of help have been pouring in, people offering to add my video to their websites, I have lost count of all the shares on Facebook, the local theatre has come on-board!

    With more planned, watch this space, the story is not yet completed…….
