I met Robin Williams: share your story submission

On four occasions, I was lucky enough to host St. Jude families in California as they participated in commercials with Robin Williams for the hospital. He met with them before the shoot, gave gifts of movie memorabilia, signed autographs, and talked with the parents about their lives. He made the St. Jude kids feel like a million bucks, and paid equal attention to the siblings. On set, he worked so hard, joking with the kids to keep the mood light, and riffing from the script until what got captured by the camera was as funny and warm as it could be. Even the crew was in stitches on his sets. The first time I met him, I remember thinking, "He's a genius. A hairy genius." The last time I saw him, which was last year, I remember thinking he seemed more calm than normal and maybe a little exhausted, but it was hot outside and he had a new TV show. Who wouldn't have been tired? His dog sat on the chair beside us. On the drive home, the family talked about how much the day had meant to them. A kind man, a comic genius, who loved children and gave generously. That's how I'll always remember him. The photo attached is of me with Robin Williams on the set of a St. Jude commercial.
