    In these health-conscious times, when so many people are on radical diets, or worrying about blood pressure, cholesterol and stress levels, it seems somewhat surprising that caring for the eyes is not deemed as a particularly high priority.

    1. Take a break from the screen. Staring at a computer screen or television for too long can cause eyes to dry out, as blinking naturally decreases during this time. Rest your eyes at least once every hour.


    2. Exercise your eye muscles. The muscles around the eye, like any other muscle in the body, require exercising. Hold a pencil tip in front of your eye and move it slowly towards your face then away again, focusing on it the whole time.


    3. Don’t stare at the sun. It’s something that most people are taught from a young age, but UV rays are very damaging to the eye. If you’re out in the sun a lot, wear UV protective sunglasses.


    4. Know your history. Some eye conditions are genetic, so it’s a good idea to be aware of any history of eye conditions in the family. If you’re worried, speak to your optician.


    5. Stay a healthy weight. Obesity can lead to diabetes, which, in turn can lead to other conditions, such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.


    6. Don’t smoke. Smoking, in addition to being bad for your lungs, is also bad news for your eyes. According to recent research, smokers are far more likely to develop problems such as macular degeneration and optic nerve damage.


    7. Eat the right foods. Believe it or not, some foods have been proven to actively promote good eye health, such as kale (which helps prevent cataracts, thanks to its high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin) and legumes, such as kidney beans and black eye peas.


    8. Wear protective goggles where appropriate. If you work in a hazardous environment, or if you’re playing a high impact sport, such as squash, protective goggles can shield your eyes, significantly lowering the chances of damage through injury.


    9. Clean your contact lenses. To maintain healthy eyes, make sure you wash your contact lenses every time they are taken in or out of the eye. Don’t use them if they are past the sell by date.


    10. Book regular appointments with your optician. Regular examinations with your optician will significantly lower the chances of any serious conditions developing.
