A World of its own - Tribal Beauty
Southern Ethiopia. More than 200,000 people still living in an ancient tribal way following their own customs and traditions. Dressing and decorating themselves in unique ways, some of them stretching their lips, some of them using mysterious body paints.
I have captured these images this summer on a rare bull jumping ceremony. I walked 2 hours in the bush to get to their settlement and was greeted with hospitality.
The bull jumping ceremony is held when one of the boys is about to become a bachelor, ready to get married. He has to run across a few bulls back, 4 times to be exact.
Women dance and song, blowing their horns and asking to be whipped. Yes, to be whipped. Enduring that pain is their way of showing their strength as they believe their husband will need a strong bride.
Capturing this vanishing way of life is a privilege.
We must take care of such a fascinating heritage, however it does not seem to be the case.
Due to the construction of Gilgel Gibe III dam, the largest hydroelectric plant in Africa once its completed, these tribes and their way of life is in danger. The tribes rely on the Omo river and its seasonal flood, livestock herding and recessional cultivation of food for survival. The dam will worsen their situation as water level will be decreased and will effect the seasonality of flows.
Whilst we cannot stop the project and prevent the tribes from all the above, we can always draw attention to this case and to its possibly catastrophic outcome.
Rumor says in about 7-8 years these unique people will melt into our world and stop living on their own way.
Seeing the last remaining frontier of Africa vanishing is heart breaking and changes are already visible.
I can never forget those moments I spent under the African night sky. Peace and silence, far away from our hectic world. Every day, before I go to bed this is the image I have in front of my eyes, its that memory that helps me to switch off and drift away to dream land.
And now people tell me it is about to vanish...
