When grandparents were cool
Roaring 20s Girlfriends
This is a photo from the early 1920’s of my grandmother (2nd from left), and some friends. My Grandmother, Michelena, was an older teen in this photo.
She was a 1st generation American, born on Mott Street in Little Italy, NY. Her parents and 2 older sisters came here from the Naples area of Italy, a few years before she was born. She also had a younger sister and brother. Of her and her 3 sisters, she was definitely the stylish one.
In this photo, you can see the flapper influence in both the clothing and hairstyles. My grandmother’s family never had much money, but they worked hard and managed. She always liked clothes, and never missed an opportunity to dress up. Even in her later years, she continued to be stylish and look good.
She always had her hair done, and kept up her fashion sense while at the same time, cooking up a storm in the kitchen, and feeding anyone and everyone who came to visit.
