She is one of the few student voices to experience and describe repression in China. In this compelling video, Jewher bravely calls for her Chinese Government to free her father, Ilham Tohti, a popular professor, who has been starved, beaten and the family terrorized. Jewher has appeared in the New York Times, at the State Department and has received a prestigious Free Expression Award for her father from the Pen American Center.

Professor Tohti's problems began in China when he created human rights website for dialogue between the minorities and the majority peoples. But when the website was infiltrated by troublemakers, he was arrested and his family harassed and now he has been indicted. He could serve a long prison term or worse for charges of advocating for secession or splitting China, a high crime.

As fierce government pressure was upon him, the Professor asserted in writing that he would never commit suicide, he would never harm himself and if anything happened, his captors would certainly be responsible. Professor Tohti has been in detention since January, 2014.
