Point of View: Exploring Health IT Innovation Through Google Glass Features - Florida Hospital Innovation Lab

Saving the sight and hearing of a stroke victim awaiting care and reducing the wait time for the treatment of breast cancer from 76 days to only one, is but a small sampling of the incredible innovations that are underway at one Florida innovation hot spot; Florida Hospital Innovation Lab.

The Florida Hospital Innovation Lab (FHIL) is where visionary leaders, clinicians, staff, and industry experts (both internal and external), intersect within a one-of-a-kind culture that inspires and supports innovation. Founded on the principals of “Design Thinking,” FHIL rolls out the red carpet for any of the Orlando campus’s 6000 employees who may just have the next great idea with promise to revolutionize healthcare.

In this three part HealthITInnovation.Com video series, "Point of View – Exploring Health IT Through Google Glass," as Google Glass Explorer and CNN iReporter, Harlon J. Wilson sits down with FHIL leaders to discuss their vision, to get the inside scoop on the wins and losses innovators face, and to take a tour of the fascinating lab.

The visionary staff at Florida Hospital are transforming the business of healthcare and the practice of care delivery for Florida residents and are proving that Disney isn't the only place where dreams come true as this video report provides an up-close-and-personal look at how the hospital inspires its staff to take part in the transformation of American healthcare.

In Part I - A Vision For Innovation - I sat down with Florida Hospital Innovation Lab Co-Founder and Director, Karen Tilstra, PhD and EdS, and Doug Hilliard, SVP & Senior Finance Officer to explore the vision behind FHIL – a lab dedicated to tapping the visionary ideas of hospital staff. I found FHIL to be exceedingly creative and well organized around solid principals that bring structure to innovation as the lab follows the “Design Thinking” theory, a development process, "...the soul of innovation," according to Tilstra, was discovered by Stanfords, Rolf Fast, and is often used as a structured process for innovation or creative thinking that is centered on deep empathy for the end-user of ideas. https://healthitinnovation.com

Under the direction of Dr. Karen Tilstra, an innovation enthusiast who holds a doctorate in innovation and whose out-of-the box visionary leadership is guided by only two words, “Yes And…” (also the the topic of an awe inspiring TedX Orlando Talk), FHIL sparks innovation. I observed the culture to be effervescently high-energy and flowing with a buzz of creativity. As a health IT innovator, I soaked up every moment of my time at FHIL and found myself inspired to roll up the sleeves and get to work innovating as an effort to solve juicy problems in the transformation of American healthcare.

In Part Two of the "Point of View" series - Innovation Showcase - what could be more rewarding for a healthcare setting than to innovate solutions in care delivery that quite literally have the power to save a stroke victim from losing their sight, or through collaboration with innovative corporate partners, enables recently diagnosed breast cancer patients to receive treatment within only one day as opposed to the average of 67 days previously known? In this segment, Dr. Tilstra and Mr. Hilliard provide a behind the scenes look into three top projects as they showcase the wins and losses of innovation.

Also explore how one project went from losing $120,000 in the first prototype to becoming the top producing department eight prototypes later — a harrowing story that exemplifies the journey of meaningful innovation must also include lessons learned when things don’t go as planned. https://healthitinnovation.com

From saving millions of neurons from damage thus reducing the risk of sight or hearing loss for stroke patients, to a collaborative partnership with GE that helped reduce the time to treatment for breast cancer patients, this interview is proof that Florida Hospital's Innovation Lab truly is revolutionizing healthcare.

In Part III - A Space for Innovation - takes viewers on a behind the scenes tour of the Florida Hospital Innovation Lab as seen only through #throughglass.
