CNN Fit Nation: 2015 Triathlon Challenge

CNN 2015 Triathlon Challenge : Life is About Stretching Yourself!

My name is George "Chip" Greenidge, Jr. I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts but I most recently relocated to Atlanta, GA to pursue my doctorate degree at Georgia State University.

I came across the CNN Fit Nation Challenge last month when I was in the CNN Center’s food court during my lunch break watching on the large monitor the 2014 I-Reporters from last year. I was immediately impressed by the individuals in the Challenge who decided to share their life and daily journeys with fitness, health and nutrition with the world. I too have the same struggles.

I have spent my life in service to others - may it be helping community residents organize meetings, encouraging urban high school students to apply, attend and graduate college, and convening a number of activities helping minorities and people of color get involved in civic life. However, over the years, I have not been able to really work on my own health and nutrition goals in the process. I see the CNN Fit Nation 2015 Triathlon Challenge as a great way for me to put those “age old issues” I have been facing of fitness, health and nutrition on “front street”. Trust me, I have been many sizes in my 44 years of life. As I get older, I have had discussions with my primary care doctor about health outcomes and life expectancy especially as a black man. I believe now I need to take action. I believe with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and support team (nutrition coach and personal trainer) and the cohort approach with others in similar situations - I will be able to master this challenge.

Recently this Fall 2014, I taught college freshmen at Georgia State University. I mentioned CNN Fit Nation 2015 Triathlon Challenge to them and as personal example on how it is important to push yourself out of your comfort zone while in life and in college. I used the metaphor that life is like an elastic band - it will always stretch you and yes "the stretching" might hurt - however you will always go back to the original elastic band size with more knowledge. I also paralleled it to their career, navigating college or trying on new activities or hobbies. One thing you must face is fear itself – you must say to yourself that you might not do well – however, you must approach it to the best of your ability. I told my college freshmen class that I plan to do this and I will put my best effort and best foot forward----- the freshmen class overwhelming said they plan to be there to support me throughout the duration of the Fit Nation Challenge.

I am new to the sport of Triathlon and I have many of my friends who have completed in competitions. I plan to relay on strength and support from them as well. I look for this to be a great challenge and I look to learn so many things about myself in the process - my strengths and challenges and how I can approach them going forward in life.

I would be honored to be one of the FIT NATION athletes and look forward share my stories through I-Reports and social media of my daily physical training and nutrition with others as they might similarly face what I am going through.

Thanks for considering me CNN. I look forward to hopefully being one of the individuals in the CNN Fit Nation 2015 Triathlon Challenge.
