The Making of Miss Paula Love

The Making of Miss Paula Love

This fall,  grab a hot chocolate and get ready to spend your evenings getting beauty tips from Youtube beauty guru Miss Paula Love.

One look at her and you can see why she is an expert in beauty. Within minutes Paula Merida feels like a close friend. Her bubbly personality and charming smile makes her easy to talk to. Paula started blogging in April 2011 while attending The University of Georgia, where she majored in Fashion Merchandising and Consumer Journalism.

Like several other girls, Paula has made a name for herself on Youtube, especially in the Atlanta area. The Youtube beauty industry is one of the most lucrative industries today. According to Videoink.com, Youtube has not publicly released statistics of views but the top 12 beauty channels have a large audience. Combined they have over 1.2 million views. Several women such as Michelle Phan, Dulce Candy, and Bethany Mota have made names for themselves by posting how-to beauty segments online. Makeup tutorials are the most viewed videos on Youtube by young girls ages 13 and up. These bloggers are also a great source to companies that are trying to get their products reviewed to a broad audience. Bloggers can start making 50 cents a day through the Youtube’s partners’ program. This pay increases overtime as their page views increase.

With so many beauty gurus on the internet it is hard to stand out. One of the keys to success on Youtube is consistency and creative ideas. No wonder Paula has so many Youtube subscribers. “Miss Paula Love is a very trendy blogger and [she] knows what’s in for the appropriate season. I love how she uses affordable products that her subscribers can actually use such as Neutrogena” said Neshane Johnson.

Paula began making videos because she loved the idea of connecting her many passions which include writing, beauty and style. “I wanted an outlet to share my advice on these topics with other girls who might be interested” said Paula. Paula first fell in love with beauty as a child. Her grandmother was a seamstress that made beautiful wedding gowns. This sparked her imagination and she began making her dream come true.

“When I started, I was honestly pretty nervous. There’s something about talking to a camera that it’s a little hard to get used to. However, I completely loved the Youtube community and the fact you could connect with thousands of people over the screen.”

Paula has had great success with her channel. Not only does she get to share one of my passions with so many people and connect with other beauty bloggers, but she has gained more exposure and experience on social media. She is a member of the Southern blog society, Latina beauty bloggers connect, Lucky magazine contributors, and Shop style bloggers. She has also had the chance to work with great companies for product reviews such as Fanatics, Influenster, Ipsy, and Ola Hawaiian Beauty which has also been giveaways for her followers.

However, with anything positive comes negative energy, especially within a social media community. Like other beauty gurus Paula sometimes receives thumbs down for her videos and harsh comments. Paula doesn’t let negativity get her down. She uses it as motivation to do better videos for her fans. “Just like with anything, there are always positive and negative comments. I’ve learned to take the negative and use it as motivation to improve and grow” she said.

Paula admires many people in the beauty world such as Cashmere, Dulce Candy, Ingrid Nilsen. The person she most admires is Lauren Conrad. Paula Ioves Conrad’s style and also how she has built herself up as an overall designer and businesswoman. She hopes to one day build a successful business like Conrad.

She hopes to expand her blog and make it a central place where her readers can find not only beauty and style advice, but also shop. “ I seek to turn it into an e-commerce site” says Paula.

As of now Paula works full-time and is also working on completing her Master’s Degree online. A typical day for Paula consists of going to work, coming home, catching up on homework and researching topics for her blog. She is  also very involved with a youth group at her local church where she volunteer on the weekends.  For more information on Paula Merida go to www.paulalove.com and follow her on Twitter at @misspaulalove.
