Modern McCarthyism: Using the Term "Socialist"
J Edgar Hoover used the term socialist repeatedly to describe black Americans who were involved in seeking civil rights. Martin Luther King and Paul Robeson were among many termed "socialist" to set them apart from the white, god-fearing capitalist-democratic citizens in this country during the red scare following WWII.
