This iReport is part of an assignment:
Colin Powell endorses Obama |
Rooting for your team
Republicans are Voting Democrat - Why? Because they are fans of America FIRST.
Let's say you were once a DIEHARD Dallas Cowboys fan, you love them with all your heart and grow up bleeding silver and blue. They are just kicking ass and on a 2 year winning streak and it seems great..
they have a tough run, but are still playing the game with heart, after a few years of win/lose seasons you are sticking with them strong. Your favorite players are still playing well and with respect. Then one season they seem to have a shot at making a run for the superbowl, instead of sticking to their old gameplay though they suddenly fire their coach. They find this guy from the Texas heartland who is just an average joe to try to build their texas base. You are a little surprised because he doesn't seem to know the game that well, but you say "well I suppose this guy could work, even though he doesn't seem that bright". They put him in charge and he starts off by taking a 6 month vacation right before the superbowl, he gets letter after letter saying things like "Superbowl win could happen but you need to get to work".. then Even though his team was doing amazing, he ignores the letters and he blows the biggest game in history and loses to the Baltimore Ravens in the superbowl (a team with players who committed Murder in a major US City)!
Then he responds by firing all his best players, and he replaces them with morons who just do whatever he says even though he has no idea what he is doing. He leads the team to 8 straight seasons of loss after loss, and not only is the team not doing better, they are getting worse and worse.
He fires the last of his best players, and replaces them with guys who are only in it for the money, they don't care about Football anymore, just getting paid. They sign a deal with some corrupt promoters and they end up spending more time trying to cheat than they actually spend trying to WIN.
They keep petitioning the league to change the core rules of football! They not only destroys the TEAM you like, they are now practically destroying the sport you LOVE! They drive ticket sales down so low that networks don't even want to play their games anymore or report on them, so they have to buy a network just to get their games aired on TV... At first you just call the networks Anti-Dallas, but after a while you realize that the other networks just don't want to air the Dallas games that end in fights instead of victory and show boring and predictable loss after loss after loss.
After 8 straight years of this, you start to feel like your team.. just isn't YOUR TEAM ANYMORE. Even when they fire the coach, and replace him with a guy with the same stupid ideas, and he hires this Hockey Coach as the assistant head coach, who doesn't even seem to have watched the sport before, the new assistant coach keeps talking about the "Goalie" and seems to think that turning fans into hooligans is the only job of the assistant coach! Then you find out she laundered money from the hockey team she used to coach, and fought to have football banned from the country at one point.
This new coach keeps saying he is different, but everything he does just shows he is 90% the same as the guy who just left. 80% of football experts think his new gameplan sucks, and 90% of strategy experts think his level of cheating is dangerous for the game! So you just get so fed up that you start to actually follow other games, and you find the players you used to like are still playing, just on other teams.
Then you flip on the Patriots one day, and it just so happens that 3 of the best players from your old team that you loved so much are now playing for them. These guys are being called "traitor" and "turncoats" but you are so tired of your team's transparant bullshit and you remember you used to really respect them, and you watch them and realize they aren't traitors, they just love the sport. Suddenly Red White and Blue seems like a good thing, it doesn't seem so horrible to just watch the other team for a bit.
You watch and realize that they seem like they have a gameplan to STOMP the Ravens. It makes you wonder if you could love this game again, and as you watch you start to get excited about Football. Sure it's not the same colors of your team, but they play the game by the rules. Sure they are rivals of Dallas and from a northern state that you just don't get, but they know the sport and the coach is so well educated and so smart, the players are so fast and so good at the game, and they play with sportsmanship.
They play with respect, and they run a defense you recognize because it was Dallas' defense before the new coach came and changed the game. The offense is a little less aggressive, but it WORKS, they like to finesse and throw the ball more rather than try to cram it up the middle, but they have fast experienced receivers who can consistantly catch the ball. Their quarterback is young (and black, which is rare for quarterbacks, but SO WHAT, he is GOOD) he plays the game better than you have seen it played in a LONG TIME! You watch more of their games and you start to remember that football is a pretty amazing sport. They get you excited about the game for the first time in 8 years. Not only can these guys beat the Ravens they can DESTROY the Ravens, and Dallas hasn't been able to beat them in the 8 years they have tried (Probably because after a year they got confused and started trying to play against Jacksonville and got all tied up in some sort of merger contract with them, which only hurt their ability to play against the Ravens).
In the end, you put away your Dallas cap, and decide that team loyalty is much less important than your love of the game. You realize the team you loved is gone, and just because they wear the same COLORS they used to on the outside, it doesn't make them the Dallas you rooted for as a kid. You put on your Red White and Blue jersey, and say I may not BE a Patriot, but I sure do love the game they play. I think I'll root for them, until my team gets back to their roots and can learn to play FOOTBALL again.
I'll always be a Cowboys fan at heart, but until my team can pull it together, I need to root for FOOTBALL first........ That just makes me a football fan, not a turncoat, or a traitor.
As hard as it is, there is nothing wrong with loving the game and discovering that means you can't be loyal to your team that seems to want to destroy it. The fact that your team has changed so much, just makes it a little easier to start wearing red white and blue, instead of worshiping the silver star.
