LuminArte Presents: The Couleur of Light by H.M. Saffer II, April 25th - June 13th, 2015

LuminArte is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by international artist, H.M. Saffer II from April 25th through June 13th. In this collection of vibrant landscape paintings, eastern style and sensibility meets western innovation and subjectivity on canvases adorned with bright, color-saturated pixels of light. Reminiscent of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles of European Modernists combined with the technical brush work and fluid, painterly applications of the Far East, H.M. creates a new vision of sunlit impressions in nature. Currently based in New York, H.M. Saffer II has experienced a wide spectrum of creative careers, including his work as a producer and song writer, and even as a chef and restaurant owner, while exhibiting his artwork internationally in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Paris, London and across the United States and Canada. Meet the artist during the April 25th reception from 7-10pm. Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Born in 1942, in Philadelphia, H.M. Saffer II proved to be a prodigy at the age of six, first exhibiting his art in a public showcase, and has cultivated that creative momentum throughout his life. After graduating from Temple University, H.M. traveled to Paris to begin a career as both a professional artist, and as a musician and song writer, performing with notable French stars Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and many others before gaining employment with Barclay Records as a producer. Saffer worked on several hit records in the late 60’s, while also maintaining a status as chef and owner of two restaurants in Paris, as well as a third in Ibiza, Spain.

Before returning to the United States in 1970, H.M. completed studies at L'Ecole Des Beaux Arts, exhibiting in Paris and Brussels, Belgium. H.M. continued on with his music career in the United States at Warner Brothers Productions where he co-wrote the international hit song, "Look What They Done To My Song, Ma", recorded by Ray Charles, Melanie and other performers. While at Warner he painted a forty foot mural in their Madison Ave., NY headquarters and exhibited his works in the firm's lobby. In 1972 H.M. was hired by the dynamic songwriter/producer Bob Crewe as Senior Vice President for the Crewe Group of companies where he worked with the industry's top names including Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Vicki Carr, and Oliver. Later that year, he established HMS Two Music Ltd. and spent his time writing and producing music for films, commercials, recordings and Broadway productions, including commercial creations for Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Ford Motor Company, and Michelob among others.

All through this period H.M.'s continued to refine and broaden the scope of his artistic endeavors. In the early 80’s he began to study the art of Sumi-e, later traveling to Japan to study with Japanese masters. While in Japan, H.M.adapted his Japanese Sumi-e brush painting techniques to Western styles of Modernist painting, and was soon represented by Galleries in Japan and in Hong Kong, benefiting from time as a resident artist with numerous, successful solo exhibitions.

After spending more than ten years in the Orient, H.M. Saffer II has developed a provocative painting style by combining western techniques with oriental techniques in a means of expressing his subjective viewpoints and emotional perspectives. The use of ‘fude’ brushwork becomes an homage to Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, giving his paintings a distinct style. This becomes most evident when viewing his more detailed elements, such as in his treatment of trees, plants, water lines and horizon lines. His paintings reflect serenity and vibrancy in an overall Joie de Vivre approach to art in both inspiration and actualization.
H.M. Saffer reentered the United States in 1994 and took residence in Upstate New York, taking on painting and art instruction full time. H.M. has instructed at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, Berkshire Community College, and Columbia-Greene Community College. He currently has gallery representation both in the United States and internationally.
