MAY '45 - SPRING IN BERLIN

"Spring in Berlin" (Frühling in Berlin) is a project by the German capital for the month of May 2015 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Among the many activities, events, and guided tours scheduled, Berlin has also organized an open-air exhibition of large-format black and white photography taken in the spring of 1945. These giant photos are displayed on large panels at numerous historical sites in the city that includes the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz and Alexanderplatz among others. By looking at the images at the locations where they are displayed, one can compare and see how the city has recovered since the war. These photos document history and serve as reminders of the insanity of war and the devastation of a magnificent and historical city. Many who witnessed the destruction estimated it would take Berlin 100 years to rebuild. Berlin rebuilt in less than half the time and is now one of the most exciting, modern and dynamic city in Europe that is rich in art, culture and tradition.
