Argentina Bank Workers Strike as Government Refuses 30% Pay Hike

Bank employees in Argentina started a 24-hour strike on Tuesday, demanding more salary and brushing off the government’s position that collective bargaining should correlate to the current drop in inflation rates.

Banks throughout the country are closed during the strike as the Secretary General of the Banking Association, Sergio Palazzo told The Buenos Aires Herald that he was not interested in the strike since a meeting had already been scheduled for Tuesday of next week.

Economy Minister, Axel Kicillof, had expected bank employees to demand a 20-22 percent increase in pay according to The Buenos Aires Herald.

The Banking Association called the strike despite the government’s call for a mandatory settlement of the wage dispute.
