    Obama Bust Carved in Wood

This 13" tall bust of Barak Obama is handcarved in myrtle wood.  The project is the first Obama carving for Chicago woodsculpter Maureen Laxpati.  The carving process starts with a chainsaw and ends with a little power sanding.  In between are many days of mallet swinging and specialized gouges from 2" width down to 1.5 mm.  Although Maureen has carved for 10 years or so, she has just this year devoted herself to fulltime woodcarving.  This is her first complete bust. Aalthough she has 2 in progress, she felt compelled to capture the spirit of Senator Obama in wood.  SHe is starting a second bust.
