This iReport is part of an assignment:
How do you describe Mom?[1] |
Courage thy name is Mom..
My Mom!!
If you look at her personality, no one would notice her in a crowd of 100 people. Thin,short.. a mere 4 feet 11 inches.. but to me, she is a portrait of courage and optimism.
In a country like India, where boys are still prefered over girls,we were all sisters. From childhood to college years,i have heard friends, relatives say the same thing many times to her...'what? all daughters? no son?
and she would answer in a confident, yet very polite way... 'yes..so what? I am proud of my girls..'
People would say to her..'They are only girls. They don't need higher education.'
Mom never said anything to such people. But from the very beginning, she was very particular about our studies. She would sit with us,help us with our studies, make sure we had good grades..I can never forget the look on her face when we brought home a really impressive report card. If during examination time, we would get worried about assignments and everything, she would give us a hug. 'I know you can do it.. I am sure..' She would say.
Today I have a masters degree in science, my other 2 sisters are engineers.
And today, when my six year old son asks me, 'Mom, can renu (my daughter) fly a plane? she is a girl..'
I tell him, 'Yes my dear. she can do anything in the world..'
Mom is 75 years old now. We lost our dad 2 years back. I still remember that nightmarish day. It was my birthday.
and I received a call from India from my brother in law. I started crying and mom took the phone.
'Do not cry. Your kids should not see you crying. Always be strong for them..' She said.
At this age also, mom has always been a pillar of strength,a picture of courage for everybody in the family.
I salute you mom,on this mothers day. Although you are thousands of miles away from me, your teachings and your love will always be in my heart.
