    Herod's Castle at Machaerus

"Accordingly [John the Baptist] was sent a prisoner, out of Herod’s suspicious temper, to Machaerus, the castle I before mentioned, and was there put to death." (Josephus Flavius, Antiquities of the Jews, XVIII, 5,2)

The trip to Machaerus, the castle where John was put to death by Herod Antipas is a winding road that led to a plateau. From the castle is a beautiful view of the Dead Sea. It was a tiring walk of about half an hour from the jump-off point to what was left of the castle. Our group spent another half hour among the ruins of Herod's castle that could really be the locus of the martyrdom of John. But as they say, the actual place may not really matter; it is the meaning of the event that does.
