Cuban-U.S. Relations: Cuban Film Festival in California

Before President Obama announced that the U.S. was going to start talks with Havana about re-establishing diplomatic relations, Jon Jackson, of Sebastopol, CA, had started the work to organize the first Cuban Film Festival in the North of the Bay area. Jackson brought Cuban film Director Alfredo Ureta to do appearances during the festival that will take place this July 24 and 25 in Sebastopol , CA.

"The Cubans are coming" announced Jackson in the promotion for the Sonoma County Cuban Film Festival that will take place in Sebastopol, Sonoma State University and Cloverdale, CA.

The festival will take place the same week that the two countries made history by re-opening its embassies. Jackson fell in love with Cuba when he visited the island a while back, his love for its culture and arts prompted him to do the film festival.

"I want to aport (contribute) a little to both countries" said Ureta outside of the house where Hitchcock filmed "The Birds" in Bodega Bay- when asked how he felt about the newly established relationships. "The Cuban people are smart and will choose the good that the relations between the two countries have to offer." added Ureta when asked how the relations will change the island.

"Cuban people are very peaceful, bodyguards don't have much work there." said Ureta jokinly when asked how much crime there is in the island.

Ureta is part of the Aurora Film Productions based in Miami Beach, FL, but he lives en Cuba with his wife and son.

When Ureta arrived in Sonoma County, he wanted to visit the iconic houses where American Film director Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie "The Birds" in Bodega Bay. "Hitchcock is my number one American director" said a smiling Ureta who is very charm, simple and intelectual.

"La Guarida del Topo" (The Mole's Den) is his film that will be featured at the Festival. Other film by other directors that will be presented are: "Conducta" (Behavior) by Ernesto Daramas, animated film about jazz in Cuba "Chico and Rita" by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba, "Viva Cuba" by Juan Carlos and Iraida Cremata Malberti, Juan de Los Muertos (Juan of the Dead) by Alejandro Brugues.

Ureta's upcoming new film is a thriller in English "Eating the Sun". Among Ureta's work are commercials, music videos and movies. Ureta's enthusiasm and charm along with his energy are the result of his current work and much more to come.
