Millions Protest in Barcelona for Independence

Protests sprung up Friday morning in Barcelona, with millions of Catalans taking to the streets, coveting for independence. With more than 50% of Catalans supporting the independence movements, it has started to become a big issue in Europe.

The independence movement has been gaining a following in recent years, along with that, tensions inbetween Madrid and Catalonia have grown as well, with Madrid denying all attempts for progression for the pro - independence movement.

"For many years, the rest of Spain always leaves us to the side, we've suffered a lot." mentioned a protestor.

The region has been presented with difficulties in the past, with Catalans being forced to pay higher taxes than any other region in Spain, they have endured so much taxation that the region has gone into debt. Many of the people that were interviewed presented the same arguments, saying that the region has always been independent in it of itself, it has its own culture, it’s own traditions, it’s own language and many say that the Spanish government does not respect that. With all these issues, it seems that Catalans have had enough with their government and are now pushing towards their own independence.

A protestor who chose to not be named said, "This movements important, because in the coming elections on the 26 of September, if we have the majority of the vote we might actually end up meeting our goal of being an independent country in the European Union.”
