    NIGHTMARE on Maywood St!

    By Frederic Hore

Oct 31, 2015 - Pointe Claire, Quebec – T’was the night of the living dead, as all manner of contorted creatures, zombies, witches, ghosts and munchkins alike, shuffled down the streets through the creeping night, in a pilgrimage to revel in the Halloween madness, at the macabre, haunted mansion… on Maywood Street.

To the oohs and ahhs of the young and old, who had come trolling down the street, grotesque ghosts, and scary skeletons, rose from their coffins, while three, evil-eyed wolves, gorged on the torso of an unlucky human. Menacing skulls and bones littered the yard, with some bubbling in a sorcerer’s pot, in a grotesque scene resembling Dante’s inferno. Not even a small boy, suitably dressed as a young Harry Potter, could cast a spell to break this mirage.

Welcome to the world of scaremongers and imaginative brothers Brent and Brad Smithemen. Corralling their energies at the eleventh hour, every year, the two 55-year olds, assisted by family and friends, create a fantastical world on their front yard, all to raise funds for a good cause, the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

In the 11 years since their odyssey began, they have raised more than $50,000 in aid of children and teen health. Taking nearly a week to setup, the display outside their home changes every year, becoming every more elaborate, to the delight of the visiting throngs.

Watching serenely from a neighbour’s yard across the street, at yet another successful evening, Brad said in a quiet, humble voice, “It’s all for the kids.”
