NASRA School and ZABMUN takes over Global Crisis!

Karachi, 7th November, 2015: the opening ceremony of NASRA Model United Nations (MUN) commenced with zeal as over 650 eager delegates from the various campuses arrived, excited to start the conference and showcase their skills and weeks of preparation. The department of SZABIST Model United Nations (ZABMUN) Social Responsibility in collaboration with Global Zero and Hot FM 105 organized the first ever NASRA MUN.

The excitement was tangible as everyone settled in the aisles according to their designated countries. The host kicked off things with humor, interacting with the audience and rallied the delegates to show support for their five respective campuses of Malir, Saddar, Korangi, Super Highway, and North Karachi

A dignified recitation and translation of the Quran started off the proceedings on an enlightening note and led into the national anthem where everyone stood proudly to honor Pakistan. Following this was the enthusiastic flag procession where flag representatives of thirty two countries walked towards the stage, with heads held high, exhibiting exhilaration.

Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali, President of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) imparted upon the audience her wisdom. Addressing the ZABMUN members and NASRA MUN delegates she impressed upon their efforts stating, “Everyone here is a superstar” and honored the memory of her beloved mother, Nasra Wazir Ali, who founded the first NASRA School that began with merely two rooms, a few tables and chairs, a piano and a handful of children. Her vision over the years has molded NASRA into the institute that it is today, educating 11,500 students annually in campuses spread across Karachi.

Next to take the stage was the President of ZABMUN, Talha Khan. He delivered a motivating speech on one of the most pressing demands of today’s generation as well as future generations being a vocal informant and advocate for the issues faced at both national and international levels.

Sir Kumail Raza Hemani, ZABMUN’s Faculty Advisor charged everyone up with his energetic entry. He advised the delegates to take this as an opportunity to learn, as Model United Nations provides the platform for students to open dialogue on the prevalent issues and their resolutions.
The opening ceremony was made even more exceptional with the appearance of the Chief Guest,

Haneen Khalid, representative of Global Zero - South East Asia. She initially spoke on awareness regarding the nature of nuclear weapons and the possible outcome of their use. Through her inspirational words, she told the students how they are capable of making a difference and how they can play a significant role in presenting solutions for global and local problems.

The opening ceremony was concluded by the Secretary General of ZABMUN, Mishaal Zulfiqar Ali by officially declaring the ceremony ‘open’.

This is the second ZABMUN Social Responsibility Conference and the first to be conducted at the NASRA School. This initiative strives on achieving well-rounded and globally aware individuals who can utilize their abilities in making, not just their own country, but the world, a better place.

Founded in 2007, ZABMUN is a society run by the students of SZABIST and is the premier Model United Nations conference in Karachi. It also has the privilege of being the largest MUN in Pakistan. Ever since its inception, ZABMUN has hosted seven, 4-day annual conferences wherein students celebrate unity in diversity and work on conflict resolution. ZABMUN caters to students between the ages of 13-24. ZABMUN’s annual upcoming conference will be hosted in January 2016.
