Ask Sen. Obama a question |
Capital Gains
In Wolf Blitzer's May, 2008 interview of Senator Obama, the senator said, "A capital gains tax increase would not affect retirees because all payouts from pension funds and 401ks are taxed as ordinary income. However, won't a capital gains tax increase reduce the net income of pension funds and thereby reduce the amounts available to retirees?
Capital gains are not currently indexed for inflation. As a result, phantom gains due solely to inflation get taxed unfairly. For example, if there was a nominal gain of 50% during a period in which inflation also totaled 50%, there would be no real gain. Senator Obama will you promote the indexation of capital gains to make our tax code more rational in this area?
