This iReport is part of an assignment:
Ask Sen. Obama a question |
Population
Senator Obama, the Census Bureau estimates that our population will swell to almost 600 million by the end of this century. There is even a more remote prospect for as many as 1.3 billion people. According to the UN, people are the cause of global warming whether it is the pollution from the autos they drive or from the flatulent cattle that provide the meat they demand. Americans account for a disproportionate share the world's output of pollutants and its demand for energy. At our present rate of 20 metric tons per capita annually, by the end of this century we will be producing 6 billion more tons of pollutants every year. Even if we are able to reduce that output by half to 10 metric tons, the per capita output of Mexico, we will have made no progress toward reducing the current unacceptable output. Given the twin problems of pollution and burgeoning energy demands, would you favor immigration and tax reforms that would enable us to stabilize our population over the next 20 years?
