Who is your hero? |
Paralyzed Veteran's Journey
Don Worley, 47, of Jacksonville, FL was paralyzed as the result of a car crash 3 years ago that was caused by a 17-year-old drunk driver. Don has set out on a 1,060 mile journey by handcycle to educate teenagers on the dangers of drinking and driving and to demonstrate that people with disabilities can overcome significant challenges. A handcycle is a special bicycle for paraplegics that is "pedaled" by hand. His journey began on October 21, 2008 with a send-off by Mayor John Peyton of Jacksonville. He is riding approximately 50 miles each day, and is now in Alabama. When he arrives in Chicago, he hopes for a handshake from Oprah Winfrey. He said that her acknowledgement would bring significant attention to what he's trying to achieve - that if he can save the life of even one teenager, or prevent them from getting behind the wheel drunk and killing someone else - then the ride will have been worth it; or if even one person with a disability is inspired by his journey and realizes they can accomplish whatever they want to do, then it will have been worth riding every mile. This is an amazing man!
