Voting problems |
vote or die: I was told to come back in 2012
I am a twenty year old African-American working third generation college student, who today was denied the right to vote here in San Antonio. Since I was a little boy my parents have taken me "vote" along with them, so I thought. I closely followed this historic election, participated in the rallies, watched the debates and confidently looked forward to casting my first presidential election that I would be eligible to vote in. I carefully looked over my checklist:
1. Register to vote -
Check
2. Show up to correct polling place --- Check
3. Present government issued identification to captains ---Check
4. Name on list -
No
5. Call Bexar County on cell phone provided --- Check
6. County indicates that some names were not transferred, nothing can be done -- sorry you are stuck like chuck-- try again in 2012 -
WHAT
7. Watch my mother and eighteen year old sister vote --- Check
8. Call Barrack Obama troubleshooting line - instructed to ask for previsional ballot
9. Call Grandpa - Son, your heart is in the right place and ask for previsional ballot
10. Go get friend who hadn't voted and bring him to precinct - Surprise he is also denied the right to vote - SURPRISE
11. Wonder if I fell back into 1968
12. Watch the election coverage -
13. Wonder what it felt like to vote for President Barrack Obama
14. Wonder how many people share my story, "The Night I Almost Voted for the First Black President." David Singh
