Obama's public school in Indonesia
US President-elect Barack Obama's school in Jakarta, Indonesia. He attended school here from 1969-1971 when he lived here with his American mother and Indonesian stepfather from age 6 to 10.
"Barack Obama's teacher said, "Obama is talented, intelligent, and also easy to relationship with friends...he joined the boy scout here. He was very interesting and diligent," said Edi Kusyanto, a school teacher, in an interview a day before Obama clinched US presidency.
"Yes, I hope Barack Obama will be president and at least he can come to his school...and he can make good situation..and make peace," he added.
The school was only a one-story building some 40 years ago when Obama was a student here, Kusyanto said. The rooms had no windows then. The walls did not reach the ceiling.
Contrary to what was reported before in articles about Obama, he stressed that the school Obama attended is a public school and not a "madrassa".
"This school is not madrasa, especially not Islam. This is public school. In this school, there are Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Protestant...it's mixed..and very peaceful here," he said. - Text and photos by ALCastro and Angeline Koh (Singapore)
