This iReport is part of an assignment:
Your thoughts on same-sex marriage |
Goodbye America
Eight years ago, I decided the only way to be with my same sex partner from Argentina was to leave the USA and move to Buenos Aires. I took two suitcases and nothing more. I spoke no Spanish, I had no residence or work permit for Argentina, but I knew I had to go. I had no choice. I was in love.
I didn't know then, when I would go back. Now it seems, I can never come back. My country, and my state, prohibits it--if I wish to be with my same sex partner of nine years. We're still in love, and after a long and hard struggle, we now live in Switzerland, where we are legally accepted as a couple.
Thus I write to youAmericato say goodbye. With the passage of Proposition 8 in my homestate of California, gay marriage is banned and discrimination is legal. Those of you who votes to pass this intitiative have succeeded in legalizing discrimination. If you could only hear what the people in Europe are saying about you--but then again, 52% of you don't care.
Let me say this--you can pass a propostion, but you can never deny us our love. Thus we triumph despite your efforts and we thank all of the other many nations of the world, such as Switzerland, who enable us to live in equality.
Goodbye.
