Spencer, IN Aftermath of the June Floods

This picture shows the Prospect Park area of Spencer, IN after the June floods.  It wasn't the nicest part of town necessarilay, but the people who live there are very proud of their homes and their land.  Many have lived there for several generations.  The flood of June, 2008 affected almost 300 residences in a small town of under 2,700 people.  We still have about 20 families without any kind of permanent housing solution.  Others are still working through the myriad of FEMA and state paperwork.  Lots of agencies showed up at the onset of the flooding.  Many say that they are still involved.  But the community has taken it upon themselves to help out each other by forming the Rebuild Owen County Committee (ROCC) that is putting together volunteer help, private and government grants, funding, and donations to help these people regain their dignity and their lives.  The most impressive thing about the whole thing is how a whole community came together, thanklessly and without any special outside effort, to help itself pull out of this natural disaster.  The worst flooding in the area since 1913.  Talk about a 100 year flood event.  Almost.
