iReport —

While the Constitution of the United States grants all Americans certain inalienable human rights, it has become painfully clear to me of late that unfortunately there is no way to force the wisdom of the Constitution onto some Americans...and believe me, there are some that need it forced upon them as they seem to have forgotten the basic principle of this document and need a good dose of wisdom.

I'm sure by now most people are aware of the support from certain churches and religions that while not solely responsible for this proposition still played an integral part of helping it pass.

Since I've been reading a lot of the posts on ireports regarding the whole prop 8/gay marriage issue, I've come to discover a very disturbing fact...there are those out there who would like nothing more than to replace the Constitution with the bible.

Anybody who has read any of my comments on other posts about this issue may already know that I'm gay, atheist, and somewhat opinionated.  But that doesn't mean I disregard the foundation of this country like others seem to be doing.

I may have my own personal beliefs, and while they may differ from the "majority" that is religious in some way, shape or form, it still doesn't change the fact that I respect their right to freedom of religion.  Having said that, I would also like to add that freedom OF religion includes freedom FROM religion.

I don't personally buy into the gimmick of organized religion myself, and while for some it may be a source of great spirituality, to others it has sadly become a great source of something else...intolerance, irrationality, and hate.

Many of the people commenting on these posts who are against gay marriage are using their own personal beliefs and religion to demean the gay community as a whole and also to justify their own unfounded fear and bigotry.

Since this issue is about rights, it is by definition a legal issue, not a religious one.  Many of the people commenting on these posts may have noticed that I like to substitute the word "religion" with the word "cult", it's not to be insulting, it's just the word I feel more closely defines any and all organized religions.

But of course what I like to refer to as "The Church of Holier than Thou" has turned this into their own modern day religious witch hunt.  It's a known fact that throughout history religion has been at the core of most of the atrocities that have been committed against the human race...all in the name of "God".

Well, I would like to call for an end of the arrogance that many of  these evangelical fanatics seem to be suffering from.  They quote scripture from a book which to me is nothing more than a fairy tale for adults.  I still have a hard time understanding how in this day and age so many people can still refer to a 2,000 year old book as their source of...well, anything!

I do believe that faith, in moderation, is a good thing for many people.  But it really comes down to what each individual has faith in.  Personally I have faith in this country to evolve past the point that we're are currently at.  Some have faith that there is a supreme being, a creator, that will be there when they die.  Hey, whatever floats your boat right?

But when did faith become religion?  When did religion become a business, a corporation?  And since when does the religion business have a say in anybody's lives but those who believe and follow said religion?  The arrogance epidemic running rampant in organized religion today is frightening to me.  Many people are intelligent and reasonable people about almost everything, but throw religion into the mix and for some reason all logic, rationale, and reason goes out the window simply because one person thinks that another should believe the way they do.

Thank goodness for our founding fathers!  But in all their wisdom to create a country that specifically prevents the "majority" from having the say so in the lives of the rest of the country, they could not have foreseen some of the developments over the last two centuries that seem to have sent the religious middle careening so far to the right that they refuse to even attempt to try to be reasonable about anything that doesn't fit in with their fairy tale.

Who ever declared that one religion was right and all others are wrong?  What gives these people the right to determine what rights I have or don't have?  And who decided that gay people should be treated as less than equal Americans simply because "the bible tells me so"?

To each his own.  I wonder if any of the cultists have ever heard this term, and if so do they grasp its meaning?  At this point I'd have to say no, as they've done an outstanding job of showing the country just how badly awry religion has gone.

On a side note, I've been getting the distinct impression that the ireporter known as tan4christ is trying to use these forums for her own vindictive purposes.  I believe she's trying to gather as much negative commentary by those of us trying to stand up for ourselves, which of course she would only pick the parts that sound the worst and take them completely out of context (hey, just like her type does with the bible) and somehow think she can use this information against the gay community when prop 8 goes back to the court to be overturned yet again.

I'm not overly concerned with this, IF this is the case, as I have confidence in our legal system that will not allow any law to pass that discriminates against any group.  However, all things being equal (HAH!) I'd like to ask that nobody even bother reading her posts as they are nothing more than religious rhetoric, and serve no other purpose than to try to incite those who disagree with her to fly off the handle and give her exactly what she wants...which honestly I'm still not sure of what that is, she seems a little off kilter, if ya know what I mean.

Anyway, just my opinion as I'm entitled to, just as everyone else is.  So as long as nobody's out there trying to take away my right to have an opinion, like they took away the right for gay couples to marry in California, then I'm cool with whatever fantasy you want to believe in.  Just stop being so arrogant as to think yours is the only one....because it's obviously not!!
