    Illinois politics: Roland Burris--legitimate selection

I'm no fan of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (I rather think he's crazy) but I do want to see his pick of Roland Burris stand as legitimate.  "Blago's" choice to replace Barack Obama is a qualified and respected candidate for the senate, who was legally nominated by the governor.  He may not be the best candidate and yes, he was selected by a despised governor, now under federal indictment (ouch!). But that's too bad. We got what we deserved and we should move-on. I think it's a mistake to spend weeks or possibly months of valuable time and tremendous resources trying to undo this sad result, one totally of our own making (that's right). The real mistakes were made years ago when Blagojevich was elected & re-elected (wow!). It's unfortunate, but if it's legal and reasonable, it should stand. The legislature already failed to pass legislation for a special election. More twisting and squirming and pleading and preaching will simply underscore that the state of Illinois' power politicians value political maneuvering and "self-respect" more than any respect they show their voters. On this issue, I'd rather we spend what little money we have on crafting meaningful legislation to clean-up the Illinois campaign finance laws that foster corruption and old-time politics or on legislation to remove the "governor's pick" law as some states have done. Since this is an interim appointment, maybe next time, just maybe, we the voters will be more careful about which candidates are puppets and which actually deserve a vote.  Caveat emptor!
