Activists Gear Up to Launch Close Guantanamo 100 Days Campaign
Activists Gear Up to Launch Close Guantanamo 100 Days Campaign
President-Elect Barack Obama promised to shut down the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in his first days in office.
Activists from across the country will descend onto Washington DC on Sunday January 11, 2009, the seven-year mark of the opening of the detention facility. The efforts are being lead by Witness Against Torture, a grassroots movement, that's supporting Obama in carrying out his promise.
The 100 Days Campaigns schedule in Washington DC will include a Fast for Justice, Prisoner Procession, film series, creative actions speakers & presentations. 40 folks have signed up to participate in the fast. Most will come to DC, and others will fast in their local communities.
Until April 30, there will be a daily presence at the White House and throughout Washington DC, including in vigils, public and Congressional education, and creative, non-violent demonstrations to make sure Guantanamo closes.
