Flooding in Fort Kent Maine with pics

The St. John and Fish rivers reached record levels here Wednesday causing extreme flooding, closing off roads, shutting down the international bridge between Maine and New Brunswick and causing the evacuation of at least 600 people.

Gov. John Baldacci declared a state of emergency in Aroostook County Tuesday night and flew to Fort Kent Wednesday afternoon to get a firsthand view of the worst flooding in the area in decades

The International Bridge between Fort kent and Saint John, New brunswick, Canada was closed and water was running over the bridge. Officials feared the bridge would collapse. Major structural damage has likely occured but for now the bridge has remained intact.

Officials also feared the levy would break and the town would be swept off the map. but the water crested just below the levy's limits and the town seems temporarily saved.
