Be yourself but look awesome when you cruise the Charity Preview
Kimberly Hayes Taylor / The Detroit News
There was a time when attending a black-tie event meant wearing a black dress. That was then; this is now. So if you're planning to be among the nearly 10,000 people at Friday's 2009 Charity Preview, you can dress however you like, says Anna Castaldi-Roselli, owner of Roma Sposa in Birmingham. If you don't feel like wearing a long dress to Detroit's premier party, wear a short one. If you enjoy fashion from the Roaring '20s, wear a shoulder-length, wavy hairstyle and slide into a knee-length ivory dress with fringe. If you were crazy about big hair and liked the '80s for its electric blues and purples, you can do that, too, Castaldi-Roselli stresses. This time, there are only two rules: Be yourself and be amazing. "Every era is in right now," says Castaldi-Roselli, who initially started a business in Italy and is summoned around the world to design gowns and provide fashion advice. "It's important to interpret it, to personalize it with your personality. It's an evening event, so if it's evening, you must be elegant. But because it's the auto show, have fun and be chic." Do that by pairing black and white, a contemporary elegance, or be bold with red, mustard, green, burgundy or anything in purple. Go Grecian to accent a sexy silhouette, wear a dress with only one shoulder or bind it up with a big, beaded belt to accentuate a thin waistline. Wear multi-layers of crinkle chiffon, lace accents or anything punched up with big stones. Castaldi-Roselli says women have been filing into her boutique since December to buy gowns for the annual event that benefits 12 children's charities in Southeastern Michigan. Since 1976, the Charity Preview has raised more than $76 million for children's charities, say event organizers. Of course, wearing black is still divine in 2009, says Castaldi-Roselli, but brown and navy have etched away at some of black's glory. If you like to be more understated, but beautiful, consider something in neutral tones, something ivory, off-white, cream or blush. Or go for an Oriental motif. Don't forget that fur has become a runway essential, and Castaldi-Roselli says a full-length fur coat for walking in to Cobo Center would be marvelous, or even a touch of fur trimming on a dress would be smoking. Castaldi-Roselli and Marguerite Paulus, owner of Marguerite Boutique in West Bloomfield Township, agree metallics such as gold, silver and copper are red-hot. But remember, it's about whatever you like. "It's a black-tie affair, and people really are buying simple elegance," Paulus says. "Some are going long, and some are going short. The bottom line is anything you put on will be lovely. That's what's important." +You can reach Kimberly Hayes Taylor at (313) 222-2058 or ktaylor@detnews.com.+ Link: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090110/AUTO04/901100388- TAGS:
