Protests, anger in Oakland |
Shot in the back, can we trust our police?
With more and more stories surfacing around corruption in police and other government agencies, one city in California will not stand for it anymore.
It is thought that the riots were fueled by supposed racial profiling by the police but it seems like the issues are much more broad.
When the officer involved with the shooting was not immediately arrested and charged with manslaughter, citizens of Oakland and surrounding counties decidedly had enough of police overstepping their grounds and took matters into their own hands. This video clip from www.Youtube.com briefs viewers on the circumstances surrounding the start of the riots.

From an article on the San Francisco Chronicle's website, The protest had started calmly shortly after 3 p.m. at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, where BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle shot 22-year-old Grant of Hayward a week ago. However, shortly after nightfall, a group of roughly 200 protesters split off and headed toward downtown Oakland, prompting the transit agency to close the Lake Merritt and 12th Street stations. The group wreaked havoc through much of downtown, drawing hundreds of police in riot gear.
Some live ground footage of the riots, about three minutes and thirty seconds into the recording it literally looks like a war is going on:

From www.sfgate.com, The Oakland Mayor, Ron Dellums, sympathized with the public but stated that he does not condone the violent acts. A protester states, "we're tired of all these police agencies getting away with shooting unarmed... males."
In Houston, Texas we find a similar situation where an unarmed man, Robbie Tolan was shot in the chest without warning by The Houstin City Police. Tolan was approaching his home when police ordered him to lie on the ground, according to an article from cnn.com, Tolan's parents heard the commotion and came outside. Police will only say an "altercation" took place. Tolan's family say it involved his mother. "The cop pushed her against the wall," said Tolan's uncle, Mike Morris. When Tolan turned to ask the officer to not push his mother, the officer shot him in the chest. Police believed Tolan's vehicle to be stolen but Tolan's SUV wasn't stolen. Both men were unarmed and relatives say they were hardly a threat to the police officer. Anger over the shooting has been building over the last week.
Incidents like this are happening more and more often as people are becoming fed-up with a faltering system. When will our government agencies start taking responsibility for their actions and begin making some fundamental changes to better serve the public? Until these types of things happen more and more people turn to violence to express themselves. And it's no wonder, with the economy in a recession people are becoming more and more desperate for change.
To top it off, here is a clip from a news program showing some police taking advantage of a drunk girl INSIDE the police station, on a security camera...
