Does the album hold up? |
Hawkwind: Space Ritual
It was 1982 and I was in a record store in Santa Cruz, CA. I came across a large bin filled with Hawkwind albums. I had never heard any of the band's output but I knew that Lemmy Kilmister, who was by then the chief Motorheadmaster, had once played bass for them so I figured I'd give it a shot. Besides, it was a cut-out... I took it home, put it on, and was never the same. Glorious noise, repetitive riffing, bizarre spoken-word interludes telling of sonic attacks, the depth of space, acting as midwife to fellow astronauts in suspended animation... This was most assuredly not my early-1980s hair metal. Not only that, but the vinyl version came with this completely insane six-panel cover that folded out to create a grand poster. I still come back to this album when I need to feel like the Master of the Universe.
