Kidnap Express in Panama City, Panama
Panama City is a beautiful place to visit, once you get used to the on-going constructions and horrible traffic jams due to lack of planification of all of the above.
But, we have had an import from Colombia called the "hijack express." You may get into a cab and all of a sudden you find yourself trapped and stripped of your cell phone while the kidnappers phone someone from your list and ask for money for your release. The kidnappers are usually successful.
On the other hand, if you report carrying more than $10,000 in cash on the customs card, your car may be stopped on your way to your hotel and robbed. Apparently, there is some corruption in customs at Tocumen airport. So, do not bring that amount in cash.
All this has been corroborated in the news.
So, visit us but be cautious.
