Yacht Captain Killed In Robbery
An Australian yacht captain was shot and killed last night after an
unsuccessful robbery in English Harbour.
Drew Gollan had apparently been walking home from dinner with his wife
and young child just after 10 pm when a man approached and demanded
money or valuables from his knapsack.
Reports say the man threatened Gollan's girlfriend and he acted in defense.
The gun reportedly fell and a shot went off, grazing Gollan's girlfriend on
the foot. The gunman reportedly then picked up the weapon and fired
three shots into the captain's chest.
The Antigua Barbuda Search and Rescue was summoned, and attempts were
made to sustain Gollan in the back of a pickup truck on the ride to the
hospital at the other end of the island. He was, however, pronounced
dead on arrival.
The incident has shocked the English Harbour community, coming in the
centre of the Sailing Week district, where business was beginning to
pick up in anticipation of the 2009 race week activities.
The family was renting an apartment behind Malone's, on the road to
Pigeon Point Beach.
Gollan was the captain of Perseus, a Perini Navi luxury sailing yacht
moored at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina.
It was the second reported homicide since the start of the year. No
arrests have been made so far.
The killing comes on the heels of the double murder of a UK couple
vacationing on island last year.
