As Iraqis go to the polls, election posters hopeful
January 26, 2009. Al Hillah, Iraq (60 km south of Baghdad).
Near the site of ancient Babylon, campaign posters for this weekend's provincial elections cover every available space. From curbs to lamp posts, bus stops to twelve-foot concrete blast walls, the streets are full of the faces of hopeful candidates.
The last time Iraq held elections at the provincial level, candidates were afraid to let it be known they were running for office, let alone show their faces. This time, they are proud to be known.
