This iReport is part of an assignment:
Surviving a tough economy
Old Dresser + Lawn Chair + Believing In Myself = Success
My name is Joe but they call me "Wet Head" for a nickname, I started plumbing when I was 17.
I never graduated High school, and I don't even have a real desk or chair.
This photo above is a picture of my "work area" in my home office if you want to call it that.
4 months ago after looking high and low for a job, my car breaking down, and a mess of other life events that WE ALL go through, I decided to start blogging about my passion,
The first few months I made very little, but now I got my first check that was able to help me pay the rent.
I could go on about how hard I had it but that's not my point,
My point is that I have made more money just "believing in myself" then anyway before.
I used to think having the "best" of everything (cell phone, latest pc etc. ) was the only way "I could make it" UNTIL I took an old dresser ( had no money for a desk ), and then took an outdoor lawn chair and pulled it forward and got my but to work writing and helping others learn about my trade.
My girl friend started helping as well and also my son Joseph who you can see in the picture as well.
We also have two kids , one of whom is disabled, but this doesn't stop us from living the American dream, and we still try every day to just keep going forward,
Sure, were not making 200k a year and don't have fancy things, But you know what we got?......We got FAMILY!
We got enough money to survive and best of all we got EACH other :)
This recession has taught me so much about how "out of control" the consumerism has become.
I was born in the 70's and brought up in the 80's so I should know better, Tisk Tisk on me,.
I couldn't be happier blogging on a sideways dresser with a lawn chair , I have my family, my kids and we have food.
Like I said, we are far from "Rich" WHATEVER that even means these days, and we could still use more income , and off course we are still behind on some bills like most people as well, Its just that the harder we work, the luckier we get and every day we at least make something, Its hard, but do able, and will a bit of sweat, tears, family and believing in yourself you can do it.
I know if I keep believing in myself everyday, I will just keep making it better.
So if you are reading this, Just do it!
Go out there and believe in yourself and you CAN get through this!
I just want to leave you with one of my favorite quotes:
"Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the roar of its many waters." ....Frederick Douglass
Much Luv to CNN and all the I reporters!
