Gaza display at Cornell sabotaged
On Feb. 9, 2009, students at Cornell University created a display to raise awareness on the recent crisis in Gaza. 1300+ black flags were displayed on the central part of campus, along with signs that explained the display and the plight of the Palestinian people. However, the flags symbolically represented the loss of lives in both Palestine and Israel.
Midway through the first day of the display, three individuals sabotaged the signs by ripping, beating, trampling, and stomping on them. Whereas the goal of the display was to create constructive dialogue, it evinced nothing but heightened intolerance towards the representation of Palestinian suffering.
