How we first met[1] |
Could I Ever Trust Again?
I married for the first time at the age of 23, he seemed like a dream man. Little did I know that he was a first rate con man and eventually I would wind up in a government safe house with an infant waiting to testify against him...
The divorce was hard and drawn out, I swore I would NEVER date again. A friend at work had other ideas and kept insisting that I meet her husband's friend 'Mike'. I resisted for 6 months, and then decided that I would go out on a date just to get her off my back.
He called and introduced himself. My friend had never told me his last name before....I had known Mike as a child! In fact, he had been my younger brothers best friend, but we had lost track of him when Mike transferred to Catholic school!
It felt like I had found a long lost buddy, and I invited him to my home to have dinner with my 15 month old son and I. We both shared a love of Chinese food so I made a feast to show off my culinary skill. After the little one went to bed, we talked until 3am about the old times and our tiny hometown.
I didn't think I had found 'romance', I thought I had a friend to help me through a rough time who just happened to be male.
Two months later, it was to change forever. On top of my other troubles, I had been begging my pediatrician for a year to look at my son more closely. He would shake uncontrollably dozens of times a day, I was told I was a 'nervous new mom'. I finally got a new Doctor for my son on Feb. 13th and took him to her office.
Within minutes of meeting him, she saw his behavior and recognized he was having seizures. He was scheduled for emergency testing the next morning.
I went home badly shaken and called Mike. He immediately came over and helped me keep my baby awake all night for the tests. He drove me to the hospital that Valentines Day and was there for me when the neurologist said my baby had clonic seizures. When we got to my apartment, I cried into his shoulder for hours.
After everyone had a nap, he told me he loved me and my son. He said that even though he didn't have much to offer us at the moment monetarily things would get better and we'd all be happy...
That was 7 years ago. We're married and have added another son to our family (that's the two of them in the picture). My oldest has been raised by Mike as his own child and has a rather spoiled existance.
Believe that good things and people can come into your life!
PS. My son has been seizure free for 5 years!
