Pizza Hut Sells Pies For A Penny

In honor of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday, Pizza Hut is selling medium pies for just a penny with the purchase of a large pizza at menu price with its "penny pizza deal." The President's Day promotion began Thursday and will run indefinitely, officials said. "We haven't put an end date on it yet," Chris Fuller, a Pizza Hut spokesman, told AOL Food. "We know that people are looking for value offerings right now and we wanted to be sure to provide an option that was affordable to customers." It's unlikely the 16th president ever snacked on a slice. Lombardi's claims to be the nation's first licensed pizzeria, and it opened in 1905 in New York. Instead, Lincoln was partial to chicken fricassee, fruit salad, and cheese and crackers, says food historian Francine Segan. The Pizza Hut promotion is the latest in a slew of celebrations for Lincoln's birthday bicentennial, honoring the president's Feb. 12, 1809, birth in a Kentucky log cabin.
