This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Ask Dr. Gupta

    Childrens swim equipment by Speedo

Hi I recently purchased a snorkel set.

After a couple of days my children developed sores in their mouths and

fever over a 100fht.  I checked all the neighbors and no one had any

similar illnesses. I then took the children to the local hospital. At the hospital I asked the front desk person at check in if others have

been coming in with similar claims.  She said no. I then asked the nurses if any children had been coming in with the same things they as

well said no. The doctor took a throat culture and a few days later the results came back non viral.

I then inspected the set closer and found it to have a very strong chemical odor and the material had become stiff and sticky about a week

    after purchase.

I contacted Speedo and they took a few days to respond.  They then forwarded me to the Warnaco legal department and it took awhile for

them to reply even after my attempts of contact.  Finally they answered and conversation went on for about two weeks and they wanted me to send

them the set but I was not willing to send them my only evidence.

They said it was just a virus from others around the area but I told

them the tests were negative for viruses. I then contacted some friends

and was told to get a patch test done for allergic reactions and I

requested the ingredients from Warnaco and they took awhile to reply

but only said they were willing to do testing on the set if I send it

to them.  I again set the same request and they finally stated the

company policy does not allow the public to know the ingredients.

(there is no label of warning or ingredients on the packaging.

After that attempt I contacted Speedo Japan and they were very kind and

said If the children were from Japan they would do testing on the

children right away and that they do not carry the same set in Japan.

They did say it could be made of silicon or vinyl chloride.

I researched the vinyl chloride and found that there have been many

past reports of consumer allergic reactions to products containing

    vinyl chloride.

My son till this day has developed a chronic cough and I have not received any follow up from Warnaco or Speedo USA.

I really believe after the process of elimination that the set is

responsible for the children's illnesses.  By the way the set contains

a transparent stamped label Made In China barely visible.
