This iReport is part of an assignment:
Surviving a tough economy |
Homeless Share Story on Recession
As the homeless scramble to survive in a struggling economy, finding emergency shelter becomes increasingly critical. One small town opened their hearts and wallets for survival amidst homelessness and economic swag.
The Danville Homeless Shelter closed its doors December 31, 2008 after being open for 16 years. One month later, The "House of Hope" reopened in high spirits to serve our region with an emergency shelter.
A small group of local citizens joined forces to repair the facility. They volunteered their time and gave what money they could to get it back in shape for the Men, Women, and Children who are homeless. Extreme cold temperatures and NO jobs have wreaked havoc on our homeless population.
But, the majority of homeless citizens will not share their experiences on camera - until now. My son and I donated a new website for folks to visit, and to help those who are in need. Two homeless guests agreed to give their testimony on camera for me. It was shocking to hear from the ones who are struggling the most.
Too often we forget about those who are affected. Our community pulled together their resources and talents to help them out of the situation and into viable living conditions.
