A few months ago I submitted an iReport called 'Thailand is Unsafe for Tourists and Expats' when the Thai government was clashing (again) and blocking the airport:
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-154013 Things with the government and military have improved and other than in the South of Thailand, it is pretty much business as usual. However, things are getting even more dangerous in Thailand now than they were before, just with a slightly different source of danger. This week the head of a foreigner was found dangling in a bag from the Rama VIII bridge in Bangkok, his decapitated body floating in the river below. Scribbling on the wall in broken Thai make this an obvious murder that was covered up. Two more murders of foreigners in Phuket this week, business deals gone bad. As the economy crumbles in Thailand and people can't find work they turn to crime. With the lawless nature of this country there is little stopping them...especially if they have some connections. It is common for murderes to be let free on bail through lengthy legal proceedings, with many simply fleeing the country if it looks like they will have to do jail time. Life is cheap in Thailand, in a way that people from the west cannot really fathom. People can be killed for $500 or less with little chance of doing any jail time. Jealous girlfriends, wives who want to keep the assets of a foreign husband, business partners who don't want to split the money anymore...even maids who want to rip off their employer; Thailand has a murder rate 10 times higher than in the United States, and it is easy to understand why. So once again I am advising all foreigners to stay out of Thailand, until their Government shows some long term stability and their economy improves.
